Growing Up Potter
posted by Jas, 10/31/05
TIME magazine has posted an article about Goblet of Fire with quotes from Dan, Bonnie, director Mike Newell and producer David Heyman

Social life on Planet Potter doesn't always mirror that in J.K. Rowling's books. Radcliffe and Grint aren't actually very close. "Rupert I don't know that well," Radcliffe admits. "Which is weird. I think it's partly because he finished school before I did. Emma, I do know exceptionally well. Very, very well." Um, so did they ever, like ... you know? "No. But I had a big crush on her when I first met her, definitely. But she's more like a sister now, so it would be a bit incestuous. It's too weird."

Radcliffe's best friend at Leavesden is, of all people--well, let him explain it: "Will Steggle, who's my--I hate to use the word, because I'll sound like a precocious child star--but he's credited as being my personal dresser. He is in actuality my best friend in the world. And he's 39. Which is upsetting, because he is so much older, and it means he's gonna die probably before me."

The Harry Potter set is an exclusive microcosm, one that comes with its own delights and its own dangers--in other words, it's not all that different from Hogwarts. "There's never been a day when I've thought, I really don't want to be here," Radcliffe says. "Because for me, it's this or it's school. And I've never really loved being in school that much." He does leave Leavesden from time to time. This month he's acting in an Australian coming-of-age movie called December Boys. But the outside world can take a little getting used to. After all, he's a star. "I don't think about it because when you start to think about it, that's when it gets a bit weird and you put up perimeter fences and things." -- Full article

An interview with Mike Newell
posted by Jas, 10/28/05
The Telegraph has an interview with director Mike Newell who admits that he would love to direct book 7. He also has this to say about Dan, Emma and Rupert

They live a curious existence," says Newell, almost in a whisper. "But they all have good parents, and they manage to keep a certain distance between their real lives and their on-screen lives. They have a lively sense of the ridiculous, especially Dan. He knows it's weird to have Japanese girls lying down in the road in front of his car, so he can stop, get out and propose marriage to them. Which has happened. "They're all strong characters, too. You might think Rupert was rather dozy, but he's a glorious comic. He'll be a name." All three, Newell thinks, have an ability to separate themselves from the wilder excesses of celebrity. "Emma goes back to school and ordinary life, whereas Rupert's given up on school and makes other films. So he does it that way." -- Full interview

    Regarding video download
    posted by Jas, 10/27/05
As you know some of the videos I have up for download in the past couple of days have been edited, most are of Dan only and clips from the movie have been edited out, this is necessary to save space and bandwidth :-) Promo for GOF has just started, it's not in full swing yet, there's premieres, TV appearances and more junket interviews to come so I'm gonna need all the bandwidth I can save. If you have a fan site dedicated to other actors, Emma, Rupert, Katie, Robert, etc and would like to download the full video, just let me know and I'll send it to you. If you don't have the capability to edit it yourself I can do it for you, just let me know which actor you're interested in. Future clips will be zipped to save more bandwidth ;-) Don't worry, if I run out of bandwidth I will use one of those free file hosting services, no fan should be deprived of any HP goodies :-)

Update: Alright, a lot of you have asked for the full clip so from now on I will put it up for download but it will be hosted somewhere else. Again, if you're interested in specific actor, just let me know who and I'll edit the clip for you and send you the file.

A wizard just can't win: Harry's first kiss cut
    posted by Jas, 10/27/05
Chicago Sun-Times has an explaination from director Mike Newell about the kissing scene that was filmed but later cut.

Avid Harry Potter fans might be surprised there's something missing from the film that's pivotal in J.K. Rowling's original novel: You won't see Harry kissing Cho Chang (played by newcomer Katie Leung, a non-actress who beat out 5,000 other girls for the role -- just because her dad saw an ad announcing the auditions). Though the film focuses heavily on the teen wizards' coming of age -- and that kissing scene was filmed but later cut -- Newell said, ''It's the thriller aspect of the story, as Harry comes to terms with confronting Voldemort, that's the real spine of that book. ... This is the longest of the books, and it almost was going to be two films. I'm glad it isn't, but things had to be cut to make a two-hour movie.''

    GOF London press conference reports
    posted by Jas, 10/25/05
Reports on the Goblet of Fire press conference in London from various sources.

    From CBBC Newsround
CBBC: What do you think should happen next in Potter?
Daniel: For it to be set in a more exotic location - like Thailand or the Caribbean!

CBBC: What music/bands do you like?
Daniel: Music is something I'm quite passionate about, so I might go on a bit. There's a new band called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I also like The Rakes, Dogs, Hard-Fi, The Libertines - although unfortunately they are no more - and an American band called Louis XIV. Has anyone heard of them?

    CBBC: Most embarrassing film moment?
Daniel: My most embarrassing moment was the dancing. And I really wanted to be good at it because my parents are championship-winning dancers!

    CBBC: What's next for you?
Daniel: My next film is set in Australia. It's about four boys who have grown up in an orphanage in the outback. And then they get some money and send the boys to the sea for a couple of weeks. It took five and a half weeks and there was no blue screen!

CBBC: Do you have boyfriends or girlfriends?
Daniel: I have had a girlfriend, but I haven't got one at the moment.
    Emma: No
Rupert: No, not at the moment. I'm learning to drive - so that's taking up a lot of time!
    Katie: No
Daniel:We are all sad, sad single people!

CBBC: Where would you take someone on a date?
    Daniel: I don't know. Paintballing?

CBBC: Will Harry be ditching his glasses?
Daniel: I tried contacts in the first film. Harry has green eyes and mine are too blue. But they were so painful that I had to take them out. I won't be going back down that road if I can avoid it! Harry has made glasses cool. It's one of the biggest gifts that Harry Potter has given to the world!

CBBC: What was your highlight of the last year?
Daniel: I went to the Reading Festival for the first time this year. They were some of the best days of my life. By the end, we were completely exhausted. We hadn't had proper sleep in three days, but it didn't matter because it was just so cool!

CBBC: Has Daniel been playing any more pranks?
Daniel: I did one on the first film. It's a sad moment when the main priority goes from making fun of people to school, but I was doing my GCSEs last year and they took the place of a lot of other things. I'll make up for it in the fifth film. I might chuck a can of paint over Alan Rickman, or a massive can of paint over the entire cast!

    From Scifi Wire
For Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the title role in the film, the evening was an unmitigated disaster. "Harry and Ron are the worst dates in the world, and you just feel so sorry for the girls," he said with a laugh. "This night should be the greatest night in the world, but it's horrible." Speaking from personal experience, he added: "At the end of the night there's that little bit, which is quite true of those sorts of school dance things, where all the ballroom casualties are outside weeping because their night has been so horrible."

    From CNN
In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," the teenage wizard faces new terrors. A face-to-face encounter with his nemesis, the evil Lord Voldemort, for one. Girls, for another. And, still fresh in the mind of 16-year-old star Daniel Radcliffe -- ballroom dancing.

"I really wanted to be good at it," Radcliffe said of the scene in which Harry dances at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Yule Ball. In the end, he said at a press conference Tuesday for the film, director Mike Newell "very kindly didn't show anything below my waist. You never see my feet move." "Dan," said Newell affectionately, "is a kind of ballroom Everyman."

Radcliffe's down-to-earth charm is key to the success of the Potter films, which have become a lucrative franchise since "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (known as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the U.S.) was released in 2001. Radcliffe was 11 when he first wore Harry's trademark spectacles and lightning-shaped scar. Five years on, he's an assured and articulate actor who enthuses about his favorite bands -- The Libertines, Hard-Fi and Louis XIV all get the nod -- and gently coaxes his co-stars at the news conference.

Newell has turned down the chance to direct the fifth film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." Filming is due to begin in February under British television director David Yates ("State of Play," "Sex Traffic.").

Actor Daniel Radcliffe proved that he has done a lot of growing up since shooting to fame as the young bespectacled Harry Potter - he now has a taste for French novelists, grungy music festivals and glamorous Hollywood beauties. The 16-year-old was in central London with his co-stars to promote the fourth film in the Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Radcliffe, who was just 11 when he first played the role, said it was good not to be "just a child actor". He said he could now voice his opinion about his scenes on set. He told a packed press conference: "It's been an odd five years but it's been great." Asked what he wanted to do when the child wizard role came to an end he said: "We've got a while before the films end.

"I'm not absolutely confident that I'm doing them all. I'm definitely doing the fifth, but after that who knows? It makes it easier to play Harry because I've been going through all the hormone stuff like Harry has relatively recently so it's fresh in my mind, in fact it continues." Asked who his ideal date would be at the Hogwarts Yule Ball, Daniel named Hollywood beauties Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.

    From News Scotsman
Radcliffe said he was "excited" about doing new films outside of the Potter franchise. The actor previously shocked fans by saying he thought his character might die, and today Radcliffe said it was still a possibility in the final book. He said of growing up while making the film: "We have grown up in normal ways. There's nothing peculiar about the way we've matured, I don't think.

"We are older now so it's good for us to think we're not just child actors any more, we can make our own decisions - in collaboration with Mike (the director), of course. It's not just a case of going up to him and saying we don't like that. "Some people find it hard to believe that we can live normal lives. Some people think we're not telling the truth and that we're liars but we can go out. Sometimes I have to wear a hat. "For me, I only feel famous for two days a year and that's at the premiere. Having said that, there's a possibility that that might change when I'm 18. Maybe the paparazzi have been going easy on us."

But unlike his co-star Emma Watson, who plays Hermione and who queued for the last Harry Potter book "like everyone else", Radcliffe said he could not do that as he "might have been signing books for the next six hours". Radcliffe credited author JK Rowling for improving the lot for bespectacled school pupils everywhere. "Harry Potter has made glasses cool. "JK Rowling has stood up for anyone called 'four eyes' or teased about wearing glasses, she's made it a good thing."

    From Daily Mail
In the four years since landing the Potter role, Radcliffe has become one of the most famous faces on the globe. Though supposedly the highest-paid teen actor in Britain (getting a reported $12 million for this fourth film), Radcliffe remains the same modest, articulate and obviously bright kid we first met back in 2001.

''I know it sounds trite, but it really is my parents and family who keep me sane,'' Radcliffe said on Sunday. ''It's them, plus a small, tight group of friends who were my friends before all this happened.'' Since Harry Potter is fighting raging hormones these days, is his alter ego dating anyone? ''I never talk about stuff like that,'' he wisely said with a wink.

Radcliffe did say his personal love of their music led the producers to bring in Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker to write some songs and play in the big Yule Ball scene in the film. And Radcliffe says he ''would love to become a rocker if this acting thing doesn't work out.'' (Big wink, wink.)

    From Chicago Sun-Times
After five years of working together on four Potter films, that trio of Radcliffe, Watson and Grint clearly know each other well. ''Spending all that time together, either you become very close, or you want to kill someone,'' said Radcliffe. ''The good news? No one's dead yet!''

    From Ottawa Sun
There has been much speculation Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint would be replaced in the central roles of the Harry Potter films after the release next month of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth instalment in one of the most successful film franchises of all time.

"Actors routinely play a lot younger or older than they are in real life. I don't think the age thing is as big an issue as a lot of people make it out to be," says Radcliffe, 16, who plays Harry Potter. "Ultimately it comes down to whether we're still enjoying the experience. If we are then I think it would be sort of stupid not to do the rest of them."

He also adds that while reading the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, he "found bits in there where I was going 'God, I would love to do that because it's so good,' which pretty well sums up my feelings of wanting to continue to the very end."

More similar reports from Time Out and Dark Horizons which mention the negotiation with Imelda Staunton for the role of Professor Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix. Producer David Heyman also confirmed that screenwriter Steve Kloves will return to script the sixth film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Money rows despite "colossal" Potter film budget
    posted by Jas, 10/24/05
Reuters UK has an interview with Mike Newell about Goblet of Fire and the budget for the movie and a quote from Dan from the press conference.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry in the films, said he felt growing pressure as the series progressed. "There's so much pressure on them now to be getting better and better, and also we felt we were going to have to go an extra mile to top what Alfonso (Cuaron) did (with the third film)," the 16-year-old told Reuters. As well as duelling with Voldemort, Potter faces the equally daunting task of asking his teenage crush, Cho Chang, to the annual prom, a problem Radcliffe himself has faced. "I'm getting better now, but I used to be incredibly awkward with girls," said Radcliffe. "I think any guy who says 'I've never had an awkward moment with a girl' is a liar."

"One of the things that has been amazing has been my parents, who have kept me completely grounded the whole time and I've never got big-headed or anything," said Radcliffe, the 16-year-old actor who plays Harry in the films. "I never think of myself as famous. As far as I'm concerned, I'm famous for two days a year which is the premieres," he told Reuters in a weekend interview to promote "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", due out on November 18.

    An interview with Mike Newell

Dark Horizons has posted their interview with Mike Newell about Goblet of Fire

Dark Horizons: Are you surprised at how good these kids have become as actors?
Newell: Slightly, yes, I am. I was... there were two things that surprised me about them, one is that these are films like no other in which, you know... this is not like Mary Poppins. In the end Mary Poppins, it may be a film for children but it certainly isn't a film about children, it's about the adults, whereas this is not that at all, this is a film that ism for and about kids. They are simply the stars. You know when I look at this, um, schedule of these interviews that I'm doing today, Daniel Radcliffe comes first, Emma Watson comes second, Rupert Grint comes third and only then do I come... (Laughter). You know... they're, they're way out ahead. They're huge, huge world stars. And what I was surprised by was how completely level-headed they were. I didn't get any kind of backchat from them, no kind of mulishness or rebellion. I was prepared to talk to them and convince them, as I would with any other actor, but I was very surprised, and nicely surprised, by that.

Dark Horizons: Would you ever be persuaded to go back to Potter again?
Newell: Oh, yeah - you know, I think when it comes to the last one there'll be queue a mile long. I'll certainly be there

    A 'Goblet' of intense images
    posted by Jas, 10/24/05
USA Today has an article about the intense scenes in Goblet of Fire

Whether the film is too scary for children under 12 depends on the child's disposition, says star Daniel Radcliffe. "If you are a very sensitive 10-year-old, you probably couldn't see it, but then again, if you are a very resilient 5-year-old, you could," he says. "What's great is there is all the intensity, and that's fantastic. I think people would have been disappointed if we had pulled away from that. At the same time, you have got a lot more comedy. It is the funniest of the films so far. There is a nice balance of light and shade."

    An interview with Ralph Fiennes
    posted by Jas, 10/21/05
Dark Horizons has an interview with Ralph Fiennes and he talked a lot about Lord Voldermort's character and his scene with Dan in Goblet of Fire

"The poor guy had to be sort of in the grip of a statue of death holding him, while I pranced about telling him how evil I was and the genius I was, threatening him and he had to go "aagh, aagh, aagh," and I had to go ha-ha-ha-ha," he says, with a self-mocking evil laugh. "I was grateful to have two weeks to shoot this one scene in Harry Potter."

Fiennes is referring to the film's climax, in which his demonic Lord Voldemort is fully revealed, with bald head and sweat pouring down an evil visage. "It's a big, big scene, but they have to deliver and, as I'm continually being made aware by everyone I talk to, they have high expectations." It's quite a moment for Potter films, and he hopes for the desired response from his target audience. "I have no doubt children will be afraid of me now if they weren't before," he says, with a dry chuckle.

As for the pressure and hype of being the major antagonist in the latest Potter yarn, Fiennes' philosophy is to "kind of" ignore the hype and get on with the business of acting. "I don't really feel the hype for this particular Harry Potter film. I mean, I'm told about it, but I don't have a fan's investment in the books myself. I like them, I admire the world of the books, and the characters that she's created, but I'm not, as it were, an addict of Harry Potter so I guess I don't feel that sort of thing where you feel slightly possessive about something." Fiennes read the novel Goblet of Fire when cast in the film version, but laughingly concedes "I was only interested in my scene, and I had to go through thousands and thousands of other scenes which I did, dutifully, until I got to my scene and I read it many, many, many, many, many times and that was my research."

He recalls being on the Potter set, as so much larger than life. "I think a bit of me on the Harry Potter set is like a kid sort of entering into the fantasy set that when you're young you watch those movies, and it all becomes so remarkable. The Harry Potter sets are brilliant and when you walk on to them they just are amazing, so for a second you do get transported." Fiennes says he has the greatest respect for the film's director, Mike Newell, the first British director on the franchise. "That was one of the blessings of a part like this, where you're meant to be playing the distillation of evil, which can be anything, so I got lots of takes. I think the one thing we were aiming for was a sort of question, a certain amount of unpredictability in him so no one quite knows what he's going to do next or say next which I hope makes him slightly sort of dangerous." -- Full interview

Preview of Goblet of Fire from Detroit News

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Nov. 18): If there's one thing you can count on this holiday season, it's this kid Harry Potter. The movie may or may not be any good, but it will almost certainly be wildly popular. Each Potter film so far has made less money than its predecessor, but that still left the least popular "Prisoner of Azkaban" earning $789 million worldwide, making it No.15 on the all-time list of hit movies. This time out, Harry's got another new director -- Mike Newell, who's directed films as diverse as "Donnie Brasco" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral" -- but all the same trappings of wizardry and budding teen angst. The original decision to cast young unknown actors is starting to really pay off now, as Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) is still only 16. As long as they keep churning these things out at a steady pace, he should last the life of the franchise.
The buzz: Mike Newell is hardly known as a visual director, but he's a safe choice.
Personal guess: The box office will continue to decline as Harry grows up, but he'll still conjure up plenty of cash.

HPANA has posted an interview with Tolga Safer, the role of the aide to 'Professor Karkaroff' in Goblet of Fire, a part not in the books.

What was the most enjoyable scene to do in the movie?
All the scenes I worked on were great but if I had to pick only one I would have to pick the scene when Durmstrang and Beauxbatons arrive at Hogwarts and enter the great hall. Krum, Karkaroff and my character enter just after the Durmstrang boys have. It felt very powerful storming in and all the Hogwarts students snapping round and staring in amazement at us. The Yule Ball scenes were real fun to do too. Everyone is wearing their finest, dancing and having fun. We had dance rehearsals for this scene, which were hilarious. It was a bit of a tricky routine but within a couple of days we were all moving well to the music.

Nine MSN has an interview with Matthew Lewis who is in Sydney this week for the annual Supanova Pop Culture Expo. He also talked about his character Neville Longbottom in Goblet of Fire

"I just met the director for the fifth Harry Potter and they are all really positive about things," Lewis said. "I am really looking forward to get into it. I am a big fan of the books, so I know what Neville has got coming. As a character he is really great because he has got the funny sides and the comedy, but he also is kind of useless sometimes. I think it is going to get progressively darker and a lot more of the evil side of it will come into it," he said. "But still the fun, the comedy and the friendships between Harry, Hermione and Ron and Ginny Weasley and Neville."

    Exclusive: Harry's Dragon Breaks Free
    posted by Jas, 10/11/05
Empire Online met producer David Heyman recently and the latter talked a little about Goblet of Fire. Update: Full interview with David Heyman and game director Guy Miller and senior art director Alex Laurant about the Goblet of Fire game.

At a meeting to discuss the new Goblet of Fire video game out in November, the film's producer David Heyman revealed that the film's dragon scene, in which Harry has to grab a golden egg without getting fried, has been made even more nerve-wracking than in the book. "It's one of the most powerful and dramatic scenes," he said. "We've departed from the book a little bit in the sense that the dragon breaks free of the chain that ties him and it leads to this dramatic chase through Hogwarts."

Not the inside we hasten to add; the dragon is strictly limited to the outside of the school. Still, in the book the dragon required an army of keepers to keep it under control: how are they going to recapture it when it's flying around the grounds? An enigmatic Heyman said: "Let's just say it doesn't necessarily meet the happiest of ends."

icNewscastle has an article/interview with Ian Whyte, a body double for Frances de la Tour (Madame Maxine) in Goblet of Fire.

Ian said: "Frances plays Madame Maxine who's a half-giant like Hagrid, that's why he takes a shine to her. "They have liaisons but Frances and Robbie filmed those scenes, which was a relief." Ian laughed as he remembered the best part of the job . . . Madame Maxine's flamboyant costumes. He said: "Honestly, my costume is fantastic, you're not going to believe it. I look gorgeous in a dress, let me tell you!" And, with a wry smile, he added: "And there's every hope that Madame Maxine makes it to the screenplay in Harry Potter 5 . . . I'd love to reprise my role and dust off my dress." -- Full article

    Harry's Dame

News Scotsman has an article/interview about Katie Leung where she talked about her audition and her character in Goblet of Fire

"Everyone's been asking me if I'm Harry's girlfriend; I'm not, I'm his crush. Cho already has a boyfriend and Harry can't go anywhere near me. So it's all just looking and teasing," she adds with a giggle. Leung had no concept of what the auditions would be like. "It took so long to be seen - five hours." And she only started taking them seriously when she made it through to the last five. "Then when some of the cast turned up, and not only did I have to meet them but we had to do a drama workshop together, that was so nerve-racking. "I didn't realise Mike [Newell], the director, was in the room at that time. I thought: 'Who's this guy walking about and distracting me?' Then when he asked me which drama school I was at and I said I wasn't, he went: 'Flippin' monkeys!'"

Daniel Radcliffe was full of praise for her performance, describing her as a "natural". Cho and Harry's relationship develops in the later books, although Leung doesn't know if she'll be in the inevitable film versions. -- Full article

    Wandless Magic
    posted by Jas, 10/04/05
John Richardson special efferct supervisor for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire talked to Paste magazine about the special effect in the movie and working with children

"There's a maze in the film—a very tall, bushy maze, which comes to life. Visual effects did a lot of that manipulation in the computer, but I still had to build a 35-foot-long section of maze that would ripple and open and close and try to crush the occupants. The maze was operated by hydraulics, and run by a computer. We could pre-program variations, make the whole maze squeeze together. Ultimately, we just had to make it look like it was alive."

Richardson has worked on the previous Harry Potter films, and is currently knee-deep in the fifth. While impressed by the professionalism of his young subjects ("They are very, very good at what they do," he gushes), working for and with children presents its own unique challenges to an effects team. "When you're building mechanical rigs, or doing fires, or explosions, or all the other things we're called on to do—it's hard in an environment where you're surrounded by children. It adds an intensity to the whole thing." -- Full article
