Hollywood hopes for fall gold

Senior editor for Entertainment Weekly talks about upcoming fall movies including Goblet of Fire in this video report which has behind-the-scenes clips of Goblet of Fire.

"There's a lot of expectation on the shoulders of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," said Jeff Jensen, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly magazine. "It is the most important, the most pivotal of the Harry Potter books in the series so far, and the most pivotal story in this movie franchise so far. They could have just made the first three movies and just be done with the franchise. They stand on their own. But with the fourth film, Voldemort comes back."

Fall movies preview
posted by Jas, 08/30/05
Yahoo/AP has a preview of some of the fall movies including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with comments from director Mike Newell.

The fourth " Harry Potter" tale casts the young hero (Daniel Radcliffe) into an international wizardry competition that leads him to another showdown with dark sorcerer Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). The British fantasy franchise gets its first English director in Mike Newell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"). For all the magical trappings of "Harry Potter," Newell enjoyed injecting a sense of his own classroom days into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

"Aside from everything else, these are school stories," Newell said. "In a middle-of-the-road English education, the teachers are embattled, the school is a very kind of anarchic place and a very funny place, as well. Where two sets of people — one of which is becoming adults and one of which is trying to avoid going back to becoming children — clash."The anarchy of youth, it is really rich stuff. I loved that. I loved doing the school side of it."

Talking to Ralph Fiennes
posted by Jas, 08/30/05
Newsday has posted their interview with Ralph Fiennes and they talked briefly about Voldemort character

So you've been cast as Lord Voldemort. Are you a Harry Potter fan?
I can't claim to be a Harry Potter fan, certainly before. Now, I guess I'm in the family a bit. But I didn't know much about who he was, so I had to do my research…. I wasn't really familiar with the whole world of Harry Potter. But I'm now very familiar with Lord Voldemort because [in low, evil voice] I am Lord Voldemort.

How do you prepare for a character that's pure evil?
It's the hardest thing in the world to play pure, pure evil. I still don't know what it is.

An interview with Ralph Fiennes
posted by Jas, 08/30/05
In a press junket for The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes talked to CHUD.com a little bit about taking the role of Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Q: Going back to how you choose your roles and your gut instinct, what was the gut instinct that made you choose Lord Voldemort in the new Harry Potter?
Fiennes: I wrestled with it actually for a bit. I didn't know much about the world of Harry Potter before. After thinking about it, I just thought that this was such a full-on, meaty villain – a baddie. I have done more realistic villains, I suppose, but nothing in that fantastical realm, that children's realm. The Dark Lord – I haven't really done that before. And I like Mike Newell. When I saw some pictures that they drew, ideas for the look, that was when I really took the bait, I think. It's actually – I shouldn't describe it! – it's actually quite simple. I just thought, 'Yeah, that looks really cool, I'll do that!'

Q: Are you signed on for the rest of the series?
Fiennes: Not all. I think I'm doing the next one. I have a big fight with Dumbledore in the next one.

CBS: I bet, wow, I mean the ultimate bad guy
Fiennes: I have to be very, very mean to Harry Potter, very mean, yeah [laughs]

Enter Lord Voldemort
posted by Jas, 08/29/05
In an interview with the Journal News, Ralph Fiennes talked about Lord Voldermort

But the most-anticipated film is "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (Nov. 18), in which Fiennes embodies the serpentine Lord Voldemort, archenemy of our hero and "the most evil of evil of evil of evil of men," the actor says, shaking his head side-to-side before slipping on the spine-tingling silk of Voldemort's voice. He's not a big Harry Potter fan. But then, flippancy gives way to the hallmark Fiennes seriousness. "I'm not a psychiatrist," he says. "But I do think childhood is the answer. And thank God, J.K. Rowling has done the work for us. Lord Voldemort is a rejected child. Once I understood that, I could locate the rage."

Terry Gilliam, the eccentric director of such hits as "12 Monkeys", is working on the release of his new movie "The Brothers Grimm", but is still upset over being passed over for Harry Potter. According to pagesix.com, he says, "I was the perfect guy to do 'Harry Potter.' I remember leaving the meeting, getting in my car, and driving for about two hours along Mulholland Drive just so angry. I mean, Chris Columbus' versions are terrible. Just dull. Pedestrian." In addition to slamming the producers of Harry Potter, Gilliam went on to slam acclaimed director Steven Spielberg. He said: "I saw 'War Of The Worlds' and I thought Steven Spielberg is a man who makes brilliant scenes but can't make a movie any more."

2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Nov. 18)
Moving Harry, Hermione and friends back to Thanksgiving, when the first two films opened, is expected to reinvigorate this franchise. Harry's numbers drooped somewhat with the June release "Prisoner of Azbakan," even though it got the best reviews of the series. "Goblet of Fire" should also get a boost from the recent excitement surrounding the publication of J.K. Rowling's latest wizardly saga. In the new film, from the thickest and darkest book in the series, Harry must cope with not only Lord Valdemort (Ralph Fiennes), newly risen from the grave, but also fire-breathing dragons.

Fall Movie preview
posted by Jas, 08/28/05
Jam Showbiz previews some of the fall movies and has this to say about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

WHO: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
WHat: In the latest adventures of the titular teenage mage, Harry must face growing evidence that his nefarious arch-nemesis Lord Voldemort has returned. Meanwhile, the Goblet of Fire chooses Harry to compete in the Triwizard Tournament, which sees representatives from all the major wizard schools battling it out in increasingly difficult contests. And no, the "Goblet of Fire" isn't what the puberty-stricken Harry gets whenever he sees Hermione.
WHY: With the publication of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, Potter-mania is back with a vengeance -- and word is this flick is even better than the excellent Prisoner Of Azkaban adaptation. We'll forego gazing into our crystal ball and deem Goblet Of Fire money in the bank -- even if it is another sequel.

By now, summer is winding down and so, probably, is that John Grisham book you started in June. But what will you be reading the summer of 2015?
"Harry Potter and the Half-Crazed Cubicle Partner" - Now in his eighth year at the Ministry of Magic, an increasingly pudgy Potter struggles with a Dementor-infested copying machine, ministry-wide restrictions on personal E-owl and, most vexingly, his office mate, Parvati Patil, who calls him "Hotty Potty," and is constantly climbing into his (ample) lap only to giggle, slap him and fly back to her desk. Recommended only for those who loved "Harry Potter and the Help Desk Cabal."

Ralph Fiennes on Lord Voldemort
posted by Jas, 08/10/05
Coming Soon has an article about Ralph Fiennes where he talked about Goblet of Fire

Fiennes says that he's already committed to appear in the fifth film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which starts shooting in January. He knows that he'll have a big fight with Michael Gambon's Dumbledore in that. He hadn't read the sixth book yet, but he didn't believe Voldemort was in it very much, so he didn't know how large a part he would play in the resulting film.

Of course, the question is whether Fiennes will stick around for the last movie, assuming that Voldemort will play an even bigger role in the finale. Considering that J.K. Rowling hasn't finished writing it yet and no one knows who might end up directing it, would Fiennes be interested in returning as Voldemort? "I guess it's always going to be like that," Fiennes told ComingSoon.net "I have to say that I never know who's going to direct me, but I think they've chosen [well]. Certainly Alfonso Cuaron lifted the whole filmmaking onto another level, and I think that Mike Newell is going to make a really strong film. I think as long as the producers are smart. I think probably the first two films were a little too saccharine and glib, even for Harry Potter fans."

Fiennes said that some effects will be used to embellish Voldemort's dramatic first appearance on the screen, and that he'll have his own action figure. He's also already dubbed his voice for the related computer game for "Goblet of Fire". -- Full article

The Mercury reports that fans are furious at the blunder in Goblet of Fire

Scores of fans worldwide have spotted two errors in a publicity image for Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire and have demanded Warner Bros take action. The still shows the young wizard, played by Daniel Radcliffe, in front of a tomb whose inscription reads "Tom Marvolo Riddle 1915-1943". This was the birth name of Potter's arch-enemy, Lord Voldemort, who is still alive. (The letters of his name transpose to the message "I am Lord Voldemort".) In any case, Voldemort was born on December 31, 1926, fans say. And, if the name refers to his father - whom they insist could not have had Marvolo as a middle name - he would have been only 11 years old when his son was born.

Now Warner Bros. is wondering what to do before the film's release on November 16. Producers are said to be considering altering the tombstone with the latest computer wizardry. They have ruled out re-shooting scenes involving Radcliffe. But it is unlikely they can simply ignore the issue after it led to a fierce online debate. -- Full article
