Daniel Radcliffe On Journey

Dan talks about his upcoming movie, Journey, in an interview with Empire Online

You think Daniel Radcliffe and you think Harry Potter – unless, of course you've seen Equus, in which case you think images you never needed to see. But, with the end of the Potter series approaching, Radcliffe is looking to make his move to grown up movie acting. He'll start with Journey, the story of Dan Eldon, a photo-journalist who was stoned to death by a mob in Mogadishu in 1993. Empire recently spoke to Radcliffe and talked a little about the film, which Radcliffe says is not quite as close to production as reports have suggested.

"There's a lot of stuff flying around about this at the moment," he said. "I am absolutely attached to it and it would be amazing to play that part. But people are making assumptions about when it's going to happen and it won't happen – if indeed it does happen – for a while yet. But basically...Eldon grew up in Africa and discovered a gift and a passion for photography. Eventually he got too caught up in something that lead to his death".

To prepare for the role Radcliffe spoke at length with Eldon's family about his life. "They showed me some of his diaries, which the film will be based on mostly," he continued. "They're incredible. There have got to be 20 books and they're all inches thick, with things sellotaped into them and with wires coming out and everything. He was someone who died very young, but seemed to live as full a life as much as anyone who lived to be a ripe old age. It'll be incredible to play him".

We genuinely believe Radcliffe could well pull this off and we hope it gets made. If he can transfer the range and passion that he showed on stage in Equus to something on the big screen, then many a Potter critic will be silence.

Going Public with Dan and Daniel

Dan Eldon's mother, Kathy Eldon, talked about casting Dan in Journey.

Daniel Radcliffe is perfect for the role. He's young, hugely talented, he's the right age and cares about issues, but most of all, he has a great sense of humor and will inject tremendous energy into the project. He has been playing a magician for a long time. Dan was a different kind of magician – able to activate souls like his hero, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Dan will play Dan Eldon in new movie

Page has received confirmation from Dan's publicist that Dan will be involved with a new film project called "Journey" as reported in the NY Times article. The Guardian has this report about Dan's involvement. You can learn more about Dan Eldon at www.daneldon.org

From Hogwarts school to the hell of Somalia's civil war, Daniel Radcliffe is to make his biggest career leap yet. The Harry Potter actor has seen off competition from Hollywood's A-list to star in the true story of a young British photographer who met a tragic end.

The film, Journey, will see Radcliffe play Dan Eldon, a 22-year-old who was among four journalists stoned to death by a mob in Mogadishu in July 1993. Eldon left behind 17 journals, thousands of pictures and a legacy that has won admirers including Madonna and Julia Roberts.

His mother, Kathy, says that she has rejected numerous bids for film rights to the story, and met but turned down leading actors including Orlando Bloom, Heath Ledger, Ryan Phillippe and Joaquin Phoenix, all of whom were eager to play the part. But then she sat down with 18-year-old Radcliffe and his parents at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.

'The timing is right and the person is right and I couldn't ask for more,' said Kathy, a journalist, producer and activist. 'He has portrayed a magician for years and my Dan was a different kind of magician. There are parallels in the two Dans' lives. Daniel Radcliffe is a poet, he keeps journals and he's half Jewish. He has a puckishness, sense of humour and energy inside him which remind me of Dan.'

Journey will be directed by Bronwen Hughes, whose films include Harriet the Spy and Forces of Nature, and scripted by Jan Sardi, who gained an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for Shine. Kathy is yet to announce a producer but hopes to start filming next year in Kenya, as Somalia remains too dangerous. Profits will go to the Creative Visions Foundation. 'The film is a teen coming of age story - entertaining, funny, dark at times - but ultimately triumphant,' Kathy said. 'People will leave the cinema feeling inspired, thinking: "Oh my God, let me start living right now!" It won't be pious. We're not trying to idolise him or make him or a hero.'

She said she and Amy burst into tears the first time they contemplated Dan being portrayed on screen. 'A lot of older actors wanted to play this character but we resisted because Dan was a boy emerging into manhood. If you're an established leading actor then you're too old for this role,' Kathy said. 'Daniel Radcliffe is the first time we've found a young enough actor with a global following. We love the way he's a global soul. He's travelled the world and feels comfortable in the world and hasn't been corrupted by Hollywood.'

The New York Times has an article about Dan Eldon, a 22-year-old photographer for Reuters who was killed by an enraged mob in the streets of Mogadishu in 1993. The article mentions that Dan will portray Mr. Eldon in a movie about his life next year. No official confirmation yet so treat this as a rumour.
